Opportunity

Finning's customers need to make the most out of their equipment investments. By creating a digital platform, we introduced new possibilities for the customers to gain insights on their machines, improving performance, efficiency, and safety within their teams. Many of Finning's customer touchpoints were segregated, the digital platform streamlined Finning’s services and processes to improve their customer experience.

Finning sets out to create a transformative digital experience for their customers, hence the creation of My.Finning.com. My.Finning.com is a digital platform that gives visibility to the entire operation to the customer, empowering them to make informed decisions that drive business performance.

Responsibilities:

  • Bridge business needs with technical feasibilities

  • Facilitate ongoing user interviews

  • Create user flows and customer journeys

  • Design high fidelity UIs and prototypes

  • Continuous Design QA of implementation to ensure delivery

  • Create and maintain components in the Design system

Process

We worked with Finning to uncover key opportunities from their customer base by distributing the main features across several squads in agile 2 week-long sprints.  We developed a suite of apps, such as ‘Equipment Productivity’ and ‘Order Management’ for their platform.

Equipment Productivity:

My role was to help bridge the gap between business and development. One of the main features of the platform was to connect customers to their equipment’s telemetry data.

First, we interviewed various business areas to understand their needs and success metrics,

Second, we gathered customers’ insights through user interviews to understand how the data helped them make informed decisions on their equipment. and

Finally, we interviewed the engineers to ensure integration feasibilities.

Through quick prototyping, we were able to do quick validation sessions with the users, to ensure the designs encapsulate the user needs and behaviour.

Some of the data that we helped visualize to the customer included Asset Monitoring, Load and Haul Productivity, and Fuel Consumption. As the features develop, my role was to support the development team by answering any questions so that the released feature can be completed effectively and accurately.

Design System

The Design System was one of the key elements to ensure consistency between the platform’s components, especially when different designers are working on various features simultaneously. Our team decided to use Google material based components and layered on Finning's brand to deliver a cohesive brand experience throughout all the touch points. The design system was created in Sketch, which we then updated to Abstract as version control. The design system allowed our team to create high fidelity designs efficiently without compromising consistency across various squads.  My role was to create new components based on feature needs, as well as the organization of the design library.

My.Finning.com is now a well-adopted platform for customers to view and access their equipment information. Finning customers can know and manage their orders, service recommendations easily by a click of a button. They have visibility over their fleet, assets, orders, and more at their fingertips. While the engagement with the customers has increased, the platform has also increased efficiency within the organization with fewer customer support calls needed.
